Position Opening

Gangxiang (Steven) Shen is a full Professor (特聘教授,博士生导师)and Director of Optical Network Technology Research Center (ONTRC) (光网络技术研究中心主任) with School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Soochow University, P. R. China. He is a leader of “Jiangsu Excellent Science and Technology Creative Team” in the direction of optical networking and communications. Before moving back to China, he had worked for Ciena Corporation, Baltimore, MD as a Lead Engineer since October, 2008. From May 2006 to October, 2008, he was with ARC Special Research Centre for Ultra-Broadband Information Networks, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Melbourne, Australia, as an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow (APD) and Research Fellow, working with Prof. Rodney S. Tucker. He was also a Research Scientist (NSERC Industrial R&D Fellow) with Optiwave Systems Inc. in Canada in 2006. He received a PhD (under the supervision of Prof. Wayne D. Grover) from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada in Jan. 2006. During the PhD program, he was with Network Systems Group of TRLabs. He received his MSc from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 1999 and BEng from Zhejiang University in P. R. China in 1997. He was also a Research Associate with the laboratory of Network Technology Research Centre (NTRC) of Nanyang Technological University, and then a Senior Research Engineer with Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) of Singapore from 1999 to 2001.

His research interest is in optical networks and communications and network survivability. He is PI of more than 10 research projects, including Australian ARC projects (2 projects), 863 high-tech project, NSFC project, Huawei Collaborative project, etc. He has authored and co-authored more than 100 technical papers and/or book chapters.

He is a Lead Guest Editor of IEEE JSAC Special Issue on “Next-Generation Spectrum-Efficient and Elastic Optical Transport Networks,” and a Guest Editor of IEEE JSAC Special Issue on “Energy-Efficiency in Optical Networks.” He is an associated editor of IEEE/OSA JOCN, and an editorial board member of Elsvier Optical Switching and Networking and Springer Photonic Network Communications. He is a Secretary for the IEEE Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) Integration Sub-Technical Committee. He is also general co-chair or subcommittee chair of many international conferences and workshops such as RNDM 2014, ICOCN 2014, ACP 2012-2013, etc. He served as a TPC member for various international conferences such as INFOCOM, GLOBECOM, and ICC.

He received the Young Researcher New Star Scientist Award in the “2010 Scopus Young Researcher Award Scheme” and NSFC “Excellent Young Scholar” in China. He was a recipient of Australian Postdoc Fellowship (APD). He was a recipient of the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Award from the University of Alberta and the Canadian NSERC Industrial R&D Fellowship.
